The "vocal break" is the "transition point" between your lower and upper vocal registers. It is sometimes called the "passaggio." 

The lower vocal register is normally where you speak. The upper vocal register is where the high notes are.

Singers often squeeze and push and get really loud when trying to sing the high notes. Or sometimes it "flips" or "breaks" or "cracks" into an airy, hooty, weak falsetto sound.
